Jeff has always wanted us to do a Christmas record, so we started messing with it a couple years ago. This song was an exercise in group participation. It started with Don bringing the first line in from his visit out by the corner of the barn. We had surprisingly been drinking that night - Hennessy was the bottle for that Christmas rehearsal - that became the second line. We mostly did the round robin from there.
The nation has been in a pretty serious recession for the last 4 years and we wanted it to touch on the issues we knew some of our friends and their families were going through - in particular the deployment of National Guard troops to Afghanistan and Iraq. We also wanted it to hold some hope.
Most of all we wanted to get it done.
It's 2011 and the "Studio B" version is in the can. It took 6 weeks of recording on Tuesday nights and some remote contributions and mixing. Most of what you hear was recorded in a single pass from our rehearsal studio. No special mic's, pre-amps, room treatment or even a dedicated engineer. Maybe we'll do a "Studio A" version in the big room next year.
